Amid Row With India, Maldives Leader Calls For Removal Of President Mohamed Muizzu

New Delhi: Ali Azim, the leader of the Maldivian Parliamentary Minority, has called for immediate action to address the situation following disparaging remarks made by a number of Maldivian ministers against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In an article on X, Azim recommended steps to remove Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu, such as a motion of no confidence, highlighting the importance of maintaining the stability of the country’s foreign policy.

Azim questioned the dedication of the ruling party in a statement that was published on X on Monday. “We, the Democrats, are dedicated to upholding the stability of the nation’s foreign policy and preventing the isolation of any neighboring country,” Azim asked. Are you prepared to go above and beyond to unseat President @MMuizzu? “Is the Secretary of State ready to call for a vote of no confidence?” (sic).

The diplomatic row ignited after derogatory remarks were posted on social media by several Maldivian ministers following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Lakshadweep. The comments prompted strong condemnation from India, leading to the suspension of three deputy ministers in the Maldives.

Malsha Shareef, Mariyam Shiuna, and Abdulla Mahzoom Majid, three Maldivian deputy ministers in the youth ministry, were suspended due to their offensive remarks. India called the Maldivian envoy in response to the worsening circumstances to express its deep concern over the derogatory remarks.

In a statement, the Maldivian Foreign Ministry acknowledged the “derogatory remarks” on social media and made it clear that these are individual opinions and do not necessarily reflect the official stance of the government. In the meantime, the controversy has generated reactions in India, where some well-known figures have urged people to travel within their own country rather than to the Maldives.

This development coincides with a critical juncture in the diplomatic relations between India and the Maldives, as worries about the current Maldivian government’s pro-China stance mount. It will be interesting to watch how both nations handle the diplomatic obstacles and attempt to mend friendly relations as the situation develops.
